Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Module 1: Prevention

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Module 1: Prevention

Prevention of prenatal exposure to alcohol is a pressing concern. Physicians who work with women prior to and during pregnancy, have an important role in asking about alcohol use, providing advice, and in helping women change their drinking behaviour as necessary. This Program provides important information on clinical practices related to assessing and influencing alcohol use by women in pregnancy. The course takes on complex issues in a brief and highly practical way, and provides many links to resources and practice support.

After completing this module, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate increased awareness of the realities surrounding women’s use of alcohol, including how it might be difficult for women to discuss alcohol use with a health practitioner.
  • Demonstrate commitment to discussing alcohol use with all women of child bearing years, specifically the impact of alcohol use in pregnancy, while using respectful evidenced-based practices.
  • Tailor the discussion of alcohol use by women to address the needs of women at varying levels of risk; women with both low and high income, women who are Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal, and at prenatal, pregnancy and postpartum stages.
  • Demonstrate confidence in your role in the prevention of FASD, by helping women modify their use of alcohol, and make other health-related changes to alcohol use during pregnancy.

This program was supported in part by educational funding from the Public Health Agency of Canada.
