Community-based and culturally appropriate HIV/AIDS diagnosis and treatment

Community-based and culturally appropriate HIV/AIDS diagnosis and treatment

Course Overview

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a virus transmitted through bodily fluids (i.e. blood, semen, pre-ejaculate, and vaginal fluids) exchanged during sexual activity, injection drug use, breastfeeding and child birth. The advent of antiretroviral treatments has made living with HIV a chronic manageable disease. However, HIV does exhaust the immune system over several years eventually allowing opportunistic infections to result in severe health problems collectively referred to as Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS).

The focus of this course is on providing health care professionals with resources to enhance their knowledge of the primary care of people living with HIV and AIDS as well as to assist health care professionals in better understanding the diverse needs and considerations required to help the populations most vulnerable to HIV infection.

After completing this module, you will be able to

  • Diagnose and treat people living with HIV/AIDS and implement specific approaches according to primary care guidelines
  • Reduce social and physical barriers to care and offer support to persons living with HIV/AIDSand the at-risk population using a multidisciplinary model of healthcare services
  • Recognize diversity between aboriginal communities and incorporate culturally aware and community integrated health care models to your practice

This program was supported in part by educational funding from the CIHR Canadian HIV Trials Network (CTN).
