IMG Communication: Patient Centred Interview

IMG Communication: Patient Centred Interview

Patient-centred care focuses on the person as opposed to the disease. A disease is what many people may have in common, but an illness experience in unique. The illness is experienced in a developmental and social context that is different for each person. It can often overwhelm one’s coping and create various conflicts. This course will introduce the art of patient-centred interviewing through didactic content, video clips, and reflection.

After completing this course, you will be able to:

  • Recognize appropriate non-verbal communication (head positioning, eye contact, etc.).
  • Discuss effective interviewing techniques such as clarifying, bridging, and reflecting.
  • Summarize how to gather information about a patient’s concerns, beliefs, and expectations.
  • Describe how to elicit patient information – such as patient’s concerns, beliefs, and expectations – through active listening and a blend of open and closed ended questions.
  • Define FIFE and explain its role in patient-centred care.

Funds in support of this CPD activity were provided as an educational grant by Health Canada to Memorial University and independently allocated and disbursed in accordance with current CMA guidelines.
