Blood Transfusion: Overview of Blood Transfusion

Transfusions occur in a variety of settings; outpatient, emergency room, OR, pediatrics, adult, urban and rural. No matter what the setting, each transfusion is alike in that there are risks and it should not be entered into lightly. A transfusion is considered a liquid transplant.

In this module, the principles of transfusion will be addressed through the presentation of a case study.

After completing this module, you will be able to:

  1. Outline the structure, function, and regulation of the Canadian blood system.
  2. List the common indications for blood component transfusion.
  3. Recognize available alternatives to transfusion.
  4. Describe the physician responsibilities for transfusion. (inc. informed consent, risks benefits, and writing a proper order)

This continuing professional development (CPD) program has been designed to consider the following roles as defined by the CanMEDS Physician Competency Framework:

  • Medical Expert
  • Communicator

MDcme will not release personally identifiable information to a third party without an individual's consent, except such information as is required for reporting purposes to the body or bodies accrediting this course for continuing education study credits. MDcme collects and reviews all course data (registration/course completion statistics, pre/post-test and satisfaction survey) to determine if a course meets participants' learning needs. Data is reviewed to improve existing courses and to inform the development of future course offerings. If an evaluation report is provided to a third party, all data is summarized, with no participant identifying information included. Given the importance and potential impact of some courses, evaluation data may be presented and/or published in academic venues.
