Course Information

Ovarian Cancer

Ovarian Cancer

Ovarian cancer is common enough that family physicians should expect to care for patients that present with it.  The presentation is often vague and the techniques for definitively identifying it are inadequate. The “Ovarian Cancer” online CPD course will address some of the informational gaps around diagnosis, treatment and support. A case-based approach, comprising "real life" patient scenarios,  is utilized to deliver a complete learning experience.

This course is divided into three sections: Determining Risk, Diagnosis by Suspicion and Offering Hope and Support. Each section will provide you with opportunities to answer questions, consider the interactive answers and review a summarized list of key points. A list of references and additional resources (helpful to your practice) are available at the end of the course.

Learning objectives

After completing this module, you will be able to:

  • Describe the role of family history in ovarian cancer;
  • Discuss the limitations of current screening options including CA 125 and transvaginal ultrasound in early detection of ovarian cancer;
  • Explain the limitations of screening for ovarian cancer;
  • Review how to make appropriate referrals for specialty care;
  • Identify the importance of incorporating a discussion for ovarian cancer into a yearly well woman visit;
  • Describe the symptoms which are suspicious of ovarian cancer;
  • List the appropriate diagnostic tests to use for ovarian cancer;
  • Demonstrate enhanced sensitivity to the psycho-social aspects of ovarian cancer;
  • Identify appropriate community help and support; and
  • Describe how to counsel patients on treatments and options.

Funds in support of this CPD activity were provided as an educational grant by Ovarian Cancer Canada to Memorial University and independently allocated and disbursed in accordance with current CMA guidelines.
